Nutrition and Diet

This session focuses on dietary patterns that may result in weight loss including the Mediterranean diet, low carbohydrate & ketogenic diet, low-fat diet, low-calorie diets, paleolithic diet, vegetarian & vegan diets, & time-restricted feeding / intermittent fasting.

For each diet, we provide:

  • A general overview
  • Foods to eat
  • Advantages
  • Disadvantages
  • Risks & benefits

Based on client preference, sessions can be tailored to discuss just one or a few diets in greater detail.

Exercise and Physical Activity

This session focuses on the importance of exercise & physical activity in regard to weight loss. Clients are provided information about:

  • Metabolism
  • Cardiovascular exercise
  • Resistance training
  • Exercises to target specific muscles or groups of muscles

An exercise program is offered to clients at the end of the session.

Behavioral Strategies

While many weight loss programs emphasize diet & exercise, the role of behavioral modification is underappreciated.

In this session, commonly overlooked behavioral weight loss strategies are discussed in detail.

A program focusing on behavioral change is offered at the end of the session.

Weight Loss Medications

This session focuses on FDA (& non-FDA) approved weight loss medications including Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus) & Liraglutide (Victoza, Saxenda), Phentermine-Topiramate (Qysmia, Adipex, Lomaira), Naltrexone-Bupropion (Contrave), & Orlistat (Alli, Xenical).

Clients are offered information about weight loss medications that includes:

  • How these medications result in weight loss
  • How to pick the right medication 
  • Medication effectiveness
  • Common side effects

In-depth information to be discussed with your doctor is offered. Prescriptions are not provided.  

Weight Loss Surgery

In this session, weight loss surgeries are discussed including gastric band, gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, & biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch. Detailed surgical information is provided including:

  • An overview of how the surgery is performed
  • Pre- & postoperative expectations
  • Effectiveness of each surgery
  • Advantages & disadvantages of one surgery versus another
  • Complications

In-depth information to be discussed with your surgeon is offered. Surgical referrals are not provided. 

High Blood Pressure (Hypertension, HTN)

High blood pressure & obesity often occur together. Data supports the idea that obesity is a leading contributor to high blood pressure & weight loss is a well-recognized way to lower blood pressure. This session discusses:

  • Risk factors & secondary causes of HTN
  • Symptoms, signs, & complications of HTN
  • How a diagnosis is made
  • Lifestyle modifications that reduce blood pressure
  • Medications used to lower blood pressure

Type 2 Diabetes (DM2)

About 10% of the US population has diabetes & over 80% of those with DM2 are overweight or obese. The first line treatment strategy is lifestyle modification in the form of weight loss & dietary change. This session discusses:

  • Risk factors & causes of DM2
  • Symptoms, signs, & complications of DM2
  • How DM2 is diagnosed 
  • Lifestyle modifications that lower blood sugar levels & improve DM2
  • Medications used to manage DM2

Heart Burn (Acid Reflux, GERD)

It is estimated that 10-20% of the population suffers from acid reflux & 1 out of 2 people with obesity experience this condition. This session focuses on acid reflux & discusses:

  • Risk factors & causes of GERD
  • Signs, symptoms, & complications of GERD
  • How a diagnosis is made
  • Lifestyle modifications that improve symptoms
  • Medications used to treat acid reflux

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

Obesity is highly associated with sleep apnea & is considered one of the most significant risk factors for the condition. Approximately 70% of patients with OSA are obese & weight loss is the initial treatment of choice in managing the condition. This session discusses:

Osteoarthritis (OA, degenerative joint disease)

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis & is highly associated with obesity. Indeed, obesity is one of the most potent risk factors of arthritis of the hip & knee. This session discusses:
